Prevalence of Mental Illness in Immigrant and Non-Immigrant U.S. Latino Groups

From The American Journal of Psychiatry:
Although widely reported among Latino populations, contradictory evidence exists regarding the generalizability of the immigrant paradox, i.e., that foreign nativity protects against psychiatric disorders. The authors examined whether this paradox applies to all Latino groups by comparing estimates of lifetime psychiatric disorders among immigrant Latino subjects, U.S-born Latino subjects, and non-Latino white subjects.

Placebos Have Side Effects Too

From Neuroskeptic:
Everyone's heard of the "placebo effect", by which pills containing no drugs at all, just chalk and sugar, often seem to make people feel better. But if the mere expectation of improvement can produce improvement, then the expectation of unpleasant consequences, such as side effects, should make people feel worse. This is sometimes called the "nocebo" effect.

My R Research

This is the first note of my research looking for implementing R to analyze data of many many rows and looking for the best way to implement it like a data mining tool.

First of all, it's clear R is not very suitable for many rows when you don't have enough RAM memory (http://datamining.togaware.com/). So the immediate solution is the incrementation to 32GB (best 64 bits). But I'm looking for another solutions....

Talking about a Data Mining suit, I'm trying to investigate the best possible solutions about this:
- Weka
- Rapid Miner
- KNIME
- Rattle

Maybe I need to consider standards like PMML (sourceforge) (I found an integration within Pentaho)

I'm looking for something like WebFOCUS RStat but open source.

What Were They Thinking?

From Jeet Heer:
Everyone should have a hobby. Jeet Heer collects names of businesses that don’t make sense. Below are some real examples:
1. Icarus air Travel. Icarus only had one flight and it ended badly.
2. The Abelard School, a private academy. Abelard was best known for sleeping with a student.
3. Gandhi’s Fine Indian Cuisine. Gandhi was not a known to be a hearty eater or gourmand.
4. Mecca Jeans. Is it good idea to wear jeans at Mecca?
5. Ponce De Leon Federal Bank. Ponce De Leon supposedly went searching for the fountain of youth. Even though the story is not true, still that’s what his name means to most people. Would you trust him with your life savings?

World Population Prospects

The Population Division of the United Nations has statistics since 1950 and forecast to 2050 (The 2008 Revision).
http://esa.un.org/unpp/index.asp?panel=2
The estimation of the 2009 world population is 6 829 360 000, male: 3 442 851 000 and female 3 386 510 000. The estimation for Bolivia is 9 863 000, male: 4 918 000 and female: 4 945 000. As you can see, the world ratio is bigger for men but in Bolivia is bigger for women.

An extreme case I think is Russia:
